Types of Veneers

There are 3 main types of Veneers.

  1. IPS Empress System is one of the most popular porcelains
  2. Lumineers these are contact lens thin veneers
  3. Composite veneers also known as direct veneers

The IPS Empress System allows the veneer layering materials to imitate natural teeth. To change color shades or shape adjustments the dentist will place Lumineers over teeth.   In addition in certain cases, Lumineers do not require tooth preparation and may be reversed. Composite veneers use a composite resin or dental bonding to build a new outer layer therefore covers the surface of the teeth.

Procedure for Veneers

Being fitted for dental veneers is an easy procedure.  Dentists will firstly measure you for veneers at your first visit and secondly you come back to allow the made-to-order veneers to be put in place.  Thirdly depending on how many veneers you have and how long to create them, the entire process will usually take two visits within one week.

  1. First evaluation and veneer tooth preparation
    • Local anesthesia is first administered at the region of veneer tooth preparation
    • The natural teeth are reshaped in order to receive the dental veneer
    • A record is taken and approved with the patient to determine the color, bite, length and shape
    • An impression is taken for a replica model of the teeth
    • This model is sent to a lab where the individualized veneer is fabricated
    • A temporary veneer is placed on whilst the permanent veneer is made
  2. Fitting of veneer on delivery
    • The temporary veneer is removed
    • The permanent veneer is fitted and cemented into place on the teeth
    • A quality assurance check is done for any re-adjustments or re-works of the dental veneer
  3. Care of the veneer
    • Brush and floss the veneer as recommended by your dentist or dental hygienist

The procedure for composite veneers differ from porcelain veneers because they are applied directly onto teeth without the laboratory work needed.
