About Breast ImplantsMany women are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts and opt for breast implants, in fact, this has been the case for over 100 years. With so many options and countless questions, here are the answers to some of the most common questions surrounding breast implants.

Do I go for silicone or saline?

Silicone and Saline have taken over the battle for the perfect breasts since the 60’s. But what is the difference and which one is the best fit for you?

Silicone
Silicone is the most popular choice and has been for many decades because this option feels the most natural. Silicone has earned a bad reputation in the past with people arguing it can lead to breast cancer and other connective diseases, however, this has been disproved. The European Committee on Quality Assurance and Medical Devices in Plastic Surgery (EQUAM) concluded that there is no proof to support these claims. In fact, silicone is a key ingredient in many beauty products, such as lipstick and beauty creams, and women get more silicone from these than they would from implants.

Saline
Saline implants comprise of a weak salt solution similar to body fluids. The only disadvantage is these can ripple and feel ‘squishy’ because they are made of water.

Can I breastfeed after breast implants?

A lot of people are uncertain as to whether they can breastfeed after getting breast implants – the truth is it depends on the type of surgery you have had. Whether you have silicone or saline implants, breast implants may cause your nipples to be more or less sensitive than normal. You are most likely going to be able to breastfeed, as most types of surgery are compatible with breastfeeding and safe for mother and baby.

What can I expect with post-surgery pain?

It is the first 24 hours of breast implant surgery that you experience the most discomfort. The next day you will be able to shower, and some people find they can return to light work, such as office work, two to three days later. While this is possible, it is recommended that you take longer off in order to fully recover.

During recovery, the following symptoms are common and should not cause concern.

  • Pain that can be controlled by the prescribed medication.
  • Swelling that is noticeably reduced after ice is applied.
  • Soreness that is concentrated in the chest, neck and back.
  • Redness, which appears near incisions and stitches.
  • Nausea, which gets better after a snack or after sips of ginger ale.

How do I know what size to become?

There are two important factors you first need to consider:
Your current breast size: This is a factor because you have to have enough existing breast tissue to cover the implant if you have not got enough some implants may be too big to fit.
Your chest and shoulder width: Implants come in different base widths so you need to get a pair that works well with your frame.

The surgeon will be your greatest ally when deciding on your breast implants size because they understand the variables and have the experience.

So what is your job? Bring in photos, preferably of women who share your build and height and have the breast size you are after. Hunt on the Internet for before and after photos and create a clear understanding of what you are after.

When you get to the consolation stage, bring a light coloured, low cut tee shirt. This will help you not only see your curves more clearly, but it will also show you the cleavage you are likely to get. Also, it is a good idea to try on sizes you think is too large and too small; this will help you know what you do not want. Lastly, if you can, bring along a friend who will give their absolute honest opinion.

Am I too old?

As long as you are healthy, you are not too old for breast implants. It is your state of health that matters, not your age.

Will having breast implants increase my chances of getting breast cancer?

This is a common concern among women considering surgery, but it is important to note that many studies have shown women who get implants are not at an increased risk of getting breast cancer. Also, having the surgery does not delay detection of breast cancer. Finally, breast implant patients who do get breast cancer have the same chance of obtaining remission as women without implants.
