It is a fact that not everyone is a candidate for cosmetic surgery.  The BMI (Body Mass Index) is a diagnostic tool that Surgeons use to determine whether or not a patient can successfully undergo cosmetic surgery.  When your BMI is no higher than 30, you are considered a good candidate.  In case you have a BMI of 31-35, you may still be a candidate depending on the procedures that you are looking for. But most likely, Surgeons will recommend you to loose weight or, to undergo weight loss surgery.

What is exactly the BMI ?

The BMI (Body Mass Index) is the ratio of a person’s height to their weight squared.  If you are 6’2” then you will have more tissue than someone who is only 5’2”. Cosmetic Surgeons use the BMI to determine if a patient has too much body fat.  They need to ensure patient’s safety in order to achieve a successful outcome. The higher BMI, the higher risk when you undergo surgery.  Besides, a high BMI can be the cause of certain diseases, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, breathing issues, and type 2 diabetes, among others.

A Healthy BMI

When your BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.8 you are considered healthy. If your BMI is between 24.9 and 29.9, you are considered overweight.  And if it is above 30, you are considered obese. These number ranges apply to women and men, regardless of age.  With a BMI above 30, some lifestyle changes are recommended including diet and excercise in order to lose weight.  It is important to keep in mind that procedures such as Tummy Tuck and Liposuction are not weight loss procedures. They only restore proper body proportion.
