Getting to and from Phuket
Phuket International Airport has the second largest passenger volume of Thailand’s airports and very easy to access. Many airlines fly via Bangkok or Singapore, while some operate direct flights. Thai Airways, Air Asia, Bangkok Air operate the many flights to Phuket daily.

Visas
For many tourists, it is not necessary to apply for a visa beforehand, if you come from a country that is eligible for a Visa Exemption including Australia, UK, US/Canada, and are not going to be in the country for more than 30 days. NZ residents can stay up to 90 days visa free. Other tourists may be able to apply for a Visa on arrival, which costs 1,000 baht and is valid for 15 days. Everyone else, and those wishing to stay longer in the country for tourism or leisure should apply for a 60-day Tourist Visa from the Royal Thai Embassy or consulate in the country where you reside.

Weather and Temperature
Phuket is tropical, therefore is hot all year, alternating between rain and sunshine. Temperatures vary between around 20-30 degrees all year.

Safety in Phuket
Phuket is a safe destination, with no additional threat from terrorism than any other country in the world but keep these few things in mind for an enjoyable and safe holiday:
– Be wary of touts in tourist areas, selling services or offering assistance. Whilst unlikely to cause any physical harm, they may cause you needless expense and to waste valuable time.
– Be careful of your valuables – this will keep petty thefts at bay.

Attire
Being a beach resort, you can get away with wearing very casual clothing for almost any occasion at most venues. Shorts, T-shirts and sandals are the norm for daywear (men and women) and casual pants, short sleeve shirts (men and women), and simple dresses and skirts (women) ideal for night times.  Those who like to dress up at night can do so without fear but be assured that it is not necessary. Do be respectful of the Thais’ opinion towards nudity and dress codes in public places. Nude and topless sunbathing is not approved of, and the wearing of skimpy beach attire or minus a shirt in restaurants is also frowned upon.

Health
Health and hygiene standards are high in restaurants and hotels in Phuket but do use common sense when choosing what and where to eat. Hygiene is not always of the highest standard in open-air markets and mobile stalls. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t eat market and hawker food just choose only freshly cooked items and steer clear of anything that’s been sitting around a while. If buying fresh fruit try for something that still has it’s skin and has not been lying in icy water. Drink bottled water only (hotels provide free bottled water) and always wash your hands before eating.

Money and Costs
Phuket is fairly inexpensive compared to Australia, US/Canada and European countries. This translates to a great exchange rate and with a fabulous selection of clothes, shoes and food, Phuket is a shoppers and gastronomical heaven. It is easy to exchange money and credit cards are accepted many most restaurants and hotels.

Thai food is traditionally fairly hot and spicy, but most tourist restaurants tend to tone down the heat for the more fragile Western palate.
